Weekly reflection
AdherenceLow structured adherence โ€” didn't have the plan accessible on her phone (now solved), so days weren't following the prescribed slots. Logged 4 sessions this week (07-08 legs, 07-10 swim, 07-11 strength, 07-12 MTB), just not plan-mapped. Committing to real adherence starting this coming week.
Hamstring/SciaticSame โ€” variable. Painful (7/10 at worst) during the bench-related leg exercise on 07-08, but zero symptoms through the long 07-12 MTB ride.
Rotator cuffSame โ€” the peak this week was more significant than initially described. Pain reached 6/10 during the 07-11 pull-up (stopped at set 3 because of it), resolved to feeling fine by 07-12.

Job situation still lingering but currently has a lot of freedom/flexibility right now. Most of the week's focus went into building and adjusting the plan itself rather than executing it.

Notes
  • First check-in
  • Plan itself still expected to need adjustment going into next week, not just her adherence to it
  • Rotator cuff: the 6/10 peak during the 07-11 pull-up is more than the "mild ache" language in that day's entry suggested โ€” worth watching next time upper-body pull work happens, even though it resolved quickly

Week 29 ยท Jul 13 โ€“ Jul 19, 2026

MonTueWedThuFriSatSun
Cardio
Swimming
Duration55:31
Distance1,800m (36 laps, 50m pool)
Avg HR129 bpm
FeltModerate (watch effort rating 6)
MoodGood โ€” calm, unhurried, happy
Strokes

  • Backstroke: 500m
  • Breaststroke: 250m
  • Butterfly: 150m
  • Kick/Kickboard: 100m
  • Mixed: 50m
Notes
  • Personal: Learned a close friend passed away; took it easy in the pool and used the swim to process it, which helped
  • Weather: Cloudy โ€” her favorite conditions to swim in
  • Pace: 3'05"/100m average
  • Session: 9:29โ€“10:25 AM, Salt Lake City

Week 28 ยท Jul 6 โ€“ Jul 12, 2026

Cardio
Mountain Biking (MTB)
Duration1:43:53 (workout) / 2:17:00 elapsed
Distance10.26 mi
Avg HR148 bpm
FeltHard (effort 7/10)
MoodA huge win. First real mountain ride back after a concussion last year sidelined her from MTB for months โ€” she's been looking forward to this day for a long time, and it delivered. Feels really good, not just physically but as a marker that she's getting her old life back.
Notes
  • Time/location: 8:34โ€“10:51am, Round Valley North, Park City
  • Route: Round Valley โ†’ Happy Gilmore โ†’ Pulp Friction โ†’ bike park (one run) โ†’ Rusty Shovel as a build-up beyond her usual loop. Pulp Friction alone is ~5 mi; today was ~8.8โ€“9 mi by her count, 10.26 mi per Watch GPS
  • Watch stats: 364 active cal / 484 total cal, elevation gain 954 ft, avg speed 5.9 mph
  • Backstory: first MTB ride of 2026 โ€” concussion on 2025-07-16 (fall in shower, hit head on concrete wall, not bike-related) kept her off mountain trails most of last year; recovery was non-linear, didn't fully resolve until ~Jan/Feb 2026; did road biking during recovery instead but missed MTB specifically
  • Season plan: this ride is step one of a progression โ€” build up frequency on this loop, then work toward longer rides (Deer Valley) later in the season. She wants to make rides at this effort a regular part of summer/fall, not a one-off
  • HR zone breakdown (Apple Watch): Zone 1 (<123bpm) 3:40, Zone 2 (124โ€“134bpm) 9:47, Zone 3 (135โ€“145bpm) 22:47, Zone 4 (146โ€“156bpm) 40:25, Zone 5 (157+bpm) 27:13. Bulk of the ride (67+ min) was Zone 4โ€“5 โ€” a genuinely hard effort, matching the 7/10 RPE. Post-workout HR dropped from 134 to 122 to 126 bpm within ~2 min of stopping โ€” a good, healthy recovery response
  • Apple Watch Zone 2 discrepancy flagged: Watch's Zone 2 (124โ€“134bpm) runs meaningfully higher than the plan's calculated Zone 2 (99โ€“115bpm, from the standard age-based max-HR formula). Possible personalized max-HR estimate from the Watch. Not yet resolved โ€” need to check what max HR value Health/Fitness has on file to reconcile
  • Zone 2 crediting question, answered: the 9:47 of incidental Zone 2 time within this hard ride does NOT count toward the weekly 150-min Zone 2 target โ€” that benefit comes from sustained, uninterrupted time in zone, not scattered minutes within a mixed-intensity effort. If she wants both more rides like this *and* to keep hitting 150 Zone 2 min/week, that requires adding to the dedicated Zone 2 sessions (currently 120 min/week from swimming), not crediting the ride
  • Hamstring/sciatic follow-up: has a baseline hamstring issue but felt nothing during or after this ride despite the length. Her hypothesis: MTB may not load the hamstring much unless climbing continuously/steeply โ€” today's climbing was on-and-off, not sustained. Not a green light for cycling generally, sustained steep climbing could differ. Went in cautious on purpose, planned to cut the ride short if needed โ€” held up fine. Encouraging, but one ride isn't enough to call the flare-up settled, especially since the hamstring was genuinely painful days earlier (see 2026-07-08 entry)
Strength
Upper Body
Duration30 min stretching + 26 min strength (Watch: 20:16 active / 26:07 elapsed)
FeltManageable overall
Exercises
  • Dumbbell bench press 4x10
  • Crunches
  • Rotator cuff exercises
  • Pull-up (weighted) โ€” stopped at set 3
  • extra right-shoulder work after
Notes
  • Time/location: 3:35โ€“4:02pm, Salt Lake City
  • Watch stats: 60 active cal / 83 total cal, avg HR 77 bpm
  • Session: 30 min stretching before the strength work
  • Adherence: plan slot for today was the long swim โ€” did stretching + strength instead
  • Left shoulder: mild ache before the session and during the pull-up, stopped at set 3 as a precaution, added extra right-shoulder work to balance. Overall fine/manageable
  • Follow-up (07-12): shoulder feels fine
Cardio
Swimming
Duration45 min
Distance1500m
Avg HR126 bpm
FeltModerate (effort 6/10)
Notes
  • Time/location: 9:11โ€“9:56am, Salt Lake City pool
  • Watch stats: 30 laps, 50m pool, avg pace 2'59"/100m, 352 total cal (300 active)
  • Strokes: kickboard 100m, butterfly 100m, breaststroke 150m, backstroke 500m, freestyle 650m
  • Left shoulder: no pain on butterfly, felt good
  • Hamstring: felt fine, minimal engagement in swimming
  • New sensation: mild tightness in upper back, right of spine โ€” not painful, feels better with rotation/movement, icing afterward
Strength
Stretching/Mobility
Duration24 min (Watch: 24:07 workout / 33:25 elapsed)

Exercises

Stretching โ€” light/general session, no specific exercises noted

Notes

10:49โ€“11:22am, Salt Lake City. Watch categorized this as "Functional Strength Training" but it was stretching. Watch: 41 active cal / 70 total cal, avg HR 79 bpm. Described as "not much, but did do something."

Strength
Legs
DurationNot specified
FeltPainful โ€” genuinely hurt the hamstring, not just sore
MoodNot specified
Exercises
  • Leg press
  • bench-related leg exercise (exact name unclear โ€” reported as "bench pushes for legs")
Notes
  • Date: inferred from "this week's Wednesday" as of a 2026-07-12 conversation โ€” confirm/correct if wrong
  • Reported: retroactively, on 07-12
  • Hamstring: genuinely painful after this session, not normal soreness. Has been icing since
  • Pattern: same hamstring stayed quiet during the 07-12 MTB ride โ€” consistent with her hypothesis that direct gym loading affects it more than MTB terrain without sustained climbing
